Linear and non linear

I think most of the audiences are tired of the linear movies by now as they most commonly over used in movies. With none linear movies you get to understand and learn possible important information that you may need to know in order to understand the whole movie or part of the story. Nonlinear movies bring some mysteries to movie so you can understand why the setting of location started in a certain way. It leaves the audience asking the questions why thing are the way they are. It can also make the audience think why a character behaves a certain way, all these back story are great for character development. This is why I think none linear stories are better than linear stories as the audience gets to understand the characters better than none linear movies. 

While with linear story line you can't really get a characters back-story unless a character just mentions it for plot convenience. That's why I like non-linear stories better as it gives more character development and realism. More often linear movies have poor back-story in my opinion. Character development is important in movies as it can make a character actually feel alive making them seem like real people when they are just characters in movies being acted out by an actor or actress. This makes the character more believable making the audience feels more relatable to the character, which creates personal identification with those characters in movies. Personal identification is one of the main reason why people watch movies and TV shows that’s why I believe that none linear movies are better. 

Open & Closed ended movies

I will be talking about opening and closed narratives for movies but what are they? Opening ending narratives is like a sort of cliff hanger which has some mysteries at the end of the movie. This can make the viewer want more after the movie had ended. Most audiences want answers but instead left with question. A lot of open ended narratives movies are most likely to get a sequel so that the audiences can get the answers that they were seeking from before this is great for people, who want more and audiences that love mysteries in the end of movies.  

Overall they’re more close ending narratives than opening endings which is cliché and makes the viewer quickly forget about the movie they just recently seen if it’s a closed ended narrative. This is also why opening ending narratives are better, as you can socialize with other people and make theory what could have happened next. 

First I'll go into detail on how an opening ending narrative first and I’ll be analyzing not one but two so you can get a better idea of an open ending and how it can effect viewers. The movies I have chosen to analysis have both open ending narratives which are Insidious and The hobbit: unexpected journey. First I’ll analyzing insidious. The movie seems to end on a good note until the very lost 5 minutes the film where everyone seems to joyful since the family has got their child back from the clutches of the dead from the dream world where the child’s farther came from. 

Everything seems to be alright until the old woman who is a shaman took a picture of the farther which for some odd reason made him furious. He seemed to be possessed by the ghost who followed him back from the dream world but because of the picture taken by the old woman the ghost’s true identity which was revealed. Soon after the ghost thrust it to the old woman and chokes her death. There was a lot of ruckus in the living room which made the mother of the family curious to what was going on. She arrived in the living room to find the old woman body lying on the coach cold stone dead. The mother after freaks out exploring the house for her husband with no trice she returns back to the living with a photo graphic camera on the floor. She picks it up slow looking at the recent picture that has been taken she has a dark figure which looked like a woman a centenary old which appeared as a ghost in the picture. In after you soon what looks like the husbands hand reach for the wife’s shoulder but really it wasn’t the husband after all. This ends as a cliff hanger as you don’t know what happens to the wife at the end and her kids you don’t even get to find out if they all lived her die making people theory craft on their own which has a really great plot twist at the end of the movie.

I’ll now be doing the second open ended narrative which is the hobbit unexpected journey which has all the main characters on a giant cliff filled with nature. You see griffins fly off into the distance. While all character facing their next destination which seems the character have still a far road ahead of them with a mountain peak in the middle which seems to be a castle with a beautiful horizon. You see an eagle fly towards the horizon and the movie ends. This is a cliffhanger as you don’t know if they will make it to their destination this also confirms to be a squeals just from that ending itself it sets itself up for another movie making people build excited and to expect the movie to be even better than the first. This could make most people socialise with friends, family and acquaintances that have seen the film and that have enjoyed it or have hated it either way most people would talk about it more than an closed ended movie that has been fully explained beginning to end.

Now I'll be talking about what is a closed narrative as haven't really explained what it is a closed ending narrative is a movie that has really no mysteries to it by the end all the gaps and should be filled in and there are certainly no cliff hangers. 

The reason for people watching a movie with a closed ending ended narratives instead of an open ended movie it that it feels more satisfying. People want to enjoy a movie from beginning to end so they don’t feel like they have wasted their money and this why most people watch closed ended movie. The benefits of you watching a closed ended movie is that there all the mysteries are filled in by the end of the movie and you get to know how character had ended up by the end of the movie.

I'll be talking about two movies which have closed ended narrative so that I can show you examples of what I'm talking about. The movies I'll be using are About time and Season of the witch which both have a closed ending that are really satisfying ending for majority of viewers they also don't have squeal. 

About time is a British movie which came out in 2013. At the end of the movie the main character decides not to go back in time anymore because he thought that his life was perfectly fine just the way it is and wanted to lives his life like a normal everyday person. By the end of the movie he has a wife and three children which love him with all their heart. In one scene you get to see the main character walking his daughter to school waving bye to one another before he goes to work. After that you get to have a quick peak at all the characters that you have seen through the movie living out their lives while the main character is narrating so find out how they all ended up by the end of the movie. This made most people satisfied as I have asked them what they had thought by the ending of the movie and I got a positive response from everyone I have talked to about this movie.

Season of the witch is an American movie which released in 2011 which was also directed by Dominic Sena and Brett Ratner. This movie ended with four of the main character fighting off a demon which possessed the only female main character. By the end of the movie, two of the main character which are knights, end up sacrificing themselves for the greater good to banish the demon from the human realm. The main female character ends up forgetting her memories of the two knights but the priest who also survived then reminded her about what happened.  Most people would be angry as the main characters of the movie have died but it also a rarity in movies for main character to die making it stand out as a closed ended movie. This can make the viewer regret watching the movie as it feel like it ended in tragedy then a really good happy note like most movies which breaks the clichés in some parts of the movie making more people want to watch it.

  

Movie originals and remakes

The movie I have decided to talk about is the grudge and the ring and both movies are made share the same genres which are both horror and psychological making a hybrid genre for both movies.  Some of the movie themes are ghost and violence.

The grudge is an American remake. The original was called Ju – oh: the grudge which was originally a Japanese movie which was released in 2003. My opinion is that the ordinals are often at times better and then the remake and so is Ju – oh: the grudge. I also think that the acting is a whole lot better in the original then the remake. I can also relate to the character in the original since they are young teenage kids that go to high school and acted more scared then the remake actors.  The atmosphere felt completely different it was like fire and water when I watched both movies. 

The build up to both movies are also very too different to each other one is fast paste with build-up while the other is very slow and is not understandable as the other. What I liked about both was that both movies used the same actress and actor for the girl that plays as the girl that’s a ghost and the boy that plays as the ghost. There are also just more intense more scary moments in the original in the movie that had my heart beating fast then the remake. The remake of the grudge was made a year later 2004 so it not much time passed by. The movie has sort of the same story but has different routes that the movies time from each other.

The ring was originally also a Japanese movie like the grudge which also got turned into a remake for the American audience. The original was created in 1998 while the remake was made in 2002. Again the original movie wasn’t made that long ago yet for some reason the director decided to remake the movie this can be can because of a lot of reasons such as the he was lazy or it cost less as for the movie budget or maybe the director thought it was so good that  he just wanted a remake. I would have to say that I prefer the remake over the ordinal as I preferred the actors epically the two main characters which are Naomi watts who play as Rachel Keller the mother and David Dorfman who plays as Aian Keller the son. Both have great bonding moments as both mother and son care for each other a lot in the movie. 

I really like Naomi Watts character as she is very protective of her son and would go to the depths of hell and risk her own life to save her son and she shows this multiply times throughout the movie while. In original it isn’t and that’s why way I like the remake more it feel like the characters are more real. I also liked the special effect used when the ghost comes out through the movie and this suspense music comes up bring fear to the audience’s hearts.

Like I said before originals are often at times better this is as I explained in both of the movies that I talked about and why I prefer the originals over the remake over the other one.

Analysing Mise-en-scene

I'll be analysing the scene of  movies  and how much of the atmosphere it can create for an audience I'll be taken certain movie scenes while talking about the images them selves and lighting and what there audience might think at that moment in time of the movie. This scene is from a movie called "The quiet ones" which based on a true story also it is a British movie and the genre is horror. 

scene 1 of "The quiet ones" uses the camera shot medium shot as you can see the character up body and all of the character arm but you can see the lower body and you can see a bit of the background. It seems to have two character filled in a almost pitch black room with some sort of lamp almost blocked off by some sort of container this would be article lighten this would  because of the lamp. It's also the best for this type scene because its a movie it seta a really dark tone inkling there almost being no light. One  of the character seems to be a male in his 40s or 50s with some smart looking clothes closely paying attention to the other character that is in the dark but dim room. the second seems to be a young female in her teens. She has her eyes close tightly with a headband that can make the audience clearly think that she is being tested if she is unstable. This can also be backed up by the fact that she's seems to be wearing only white clothes suggesting that is a patient and he other male character is some sort doctor helping her. 

scene 2 of The quite ones have only one character that seems to be angry about something you can clearly see from this image that the female character is holding what seems to be a doll and ripping out the dolls hair from its head with force. the background uses article lighting that is light enough to see what kind of room she is in which looks like it's an old house suggesting that the house was abandoned  and that it might be hunted and it uses a long shot as you can see the character's whole body but not the entire room. as that would be long shot. the carpit seems not new but old the only thing in the room that looks new is the article lamp used in the background of this scene. the audience would most likely have a negative approach to this and would scare the mind  out of the audience. the colours used in this scene are very dark and dim setting again the most perfect atmosphere.

In the third scene of the quiet ones you can see a female character wrapped around in a blanket. She also have very scuffed and messed up hair you burly tell any detail in her face you cant tell what she is wearing. She seems to be in a her bed room which might belong to her or might not this is backed up by the fact that there is a futon in front of her.  she slightly looking in another direction of the room suggesting someone else is in their with her and she is terrified or worried of something she is also backed up by the fact that she is against the wall and using the blanket as protection.

In the fourth scene of The quiet ones the camera has a big close up and also shows the face of a female character clear with red stains on her half of her face clearly meant to resemble blood on her face. This also suggest that she has killed someone and doesn’t care as her face expression seems as plain as day and hasn’t fazed her. Lighting again is article as you can see from the blurry background that light coming through a lamp.

 In the fifth scene of The quiet ones you see two characters that seem to be in their late teens. This scene seems like it's supposed to be light hearted this show by using natural lighting coming through out the window light up the room that the character are in yet the character this blank face about them both look at the other side of the room with a serious look on their faces suggesting that some one has entered the room that they both dislike. The camera type used in this would be medium long shot as it shows the whole body but their bodies are lowered down. the room it self seems peaceful and just seems as if the two characters have just moved inside the house this is backed up by the fact that there not much in the room that you can see but maybe there is but the carting seems very old.

Task 5 Auteur Theory

The auteur theory first began in France and this theory was made a French man called Francois Truffaut in 1954. What is the auteur theory? The auteur theory is a type of trademark to certain directors but not every director would be considered an auteur.

One of the greatest movie directors of all time who is also an auteur would be Steven Spielberg. Steven Spielberg would be considered an auteur to most people because of the deep meaning and symbolism he has in his movies he also uses some of the same visual scenes and same actors in his movies. Movies like from Steven Spielberg like E.T, Indiana jones, war horse and so many other movies use the same exact techniques in his movie which is why it makes him such a great auteur.

In some of Steven Spielberg’s movies you often hear an anonymous sound like aliens which are mostly in his science fiction movies. The anonymous sound used in the Steven Spielberg movies can appeal to the audience as they have some mysteries them making the audience wonder what is going on making interested and image in the movie.

He also uses the darkest shadow to represent the brightest and purest of character with the background to represent an amazing and shocking moment in his movies. Steven Spielberg also uses the same camera style when his recoding his movies. 

So when an intense and dangerous moment is happen in movies he always zoom the camera in to have an extreme close of the character’s face to see their reaction and a lot of director seem to use this after to the movie Jaws that Steven Spielberg has made what Steven Spielberg seem to do most often is make a young boy the main character and it is known that when he does this it’s often secretly directed at him and his childhood as the boys in his movies are to a show a boy coming of age. 

You may not always see young kid in his move but when you see a parent and a child in his movie it’s often about his childhood.The constant themes Steven Spielberg uses in his movies are danger, family, tragedy and love which appeal to the majority of the audience as most of the audience likes these of types of theme when comes a movie. Because of that most of Steven Spielberg’s are often watched by a lot of people are prized to be some of best movies they have every seen.

Reception theory

Encoding in movie is the director leaving a piece of message for the audience also known as the viewers to uncover that certain message. Decoding is unravelling the message and the meaning most movies have a message that the director give the entire audience. Dominant reading are people getting the full picture and completely understand the meaning they also know the good and not too good parts of the movie.

Such an example would be x-men last stand where it’s about humans and evolved human with abnormal power why are also called mutants. The stop is about the human race fighting of these evolved humans as if they some kind of diseases when in fact they are just the next stage in the human evolution.

Decoding is the audience unrevealing the message that the director of the movie left in the movie as most movies have a messages in them. In this case it would be about culture and race and how you shouldn’t judge people just because they are different to you and that’s biggest message that of all and how you try and get along with people as war doesn’t solve anything or even fight for what you believe in if you know it’s the right thing to do all the x-men movies have.

Dominant reading is taken directors messages and everything into looking at everything from a bigger perspective. For example in the x-men movie are in fact dangerous mutants that are a threat to humanity but there are also some mutants that are helping humanity any way they can some seem to also just live their life like most normal people. In real life the message in this would be just because someone is a different race like if they were black for example it doesn’t mean that they are rude or violent will try to hurt people because that seems to be a really big stereotype when in reality everyone can be a threat to anyone.
